ColburnColburn is a privately owned, Independent Insurance & Risk Services Firm with locations in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; Detroit, Michigan and Cincinnati, Ohio. The founding principals of the firm are David H. Colburn, J.D. and Robert S. Colburn.

HISTORY

The Colburn legacy of excellence in the insurance industry spans more than 65 years and two generations. This tradition was established by our father, Sherwood Colburn, Agency Pioneer, Insurance Commissioner of the State of Michigan and Community Leader. Today, this legacy of excellence continues to build as company principals David H. Colburn, J.D. and Robert S. Colburn draw on more than 70 years of combined experience to deliver innovation to a diverse client base.

Robert S. Colburn

PRINCIPAL

CURRENT: Robert Colburn is an owner / principal in Colburn Risk Holdings L.L.C. d/b/a Colburn Colburn Insurance and Risk Services. The agency primarily focuses on the production and servicing of commercial property and casualty insurance and provides a full range of risk management services to their clients. Robert is currently under consideration as a “Power Broker” in Risk and Insurance Magazine’s 2017 Power Broker Issue in the Real Estate Category. This “designation” recognizes the best commercial/property casualty brokers in more than 20 industry categories.

WORK BACKGROUND:
2004 to 2007: Robert Colburn was an owner / principal of LSG Insurance Partners located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. The agency provided insurance and risk management services to clients including, commercial property and casualty, health and benefits and financial services / 401(k).

1996 to 2004: Robert Colburn was a founder and principal of Colburn Colburn & Associates, L.L.C., an independent insurance agency located in Southfield, Michigan. The agency primarily focused on the production and servicing of commercial property and casualty insurance and provided a full range of risk management services to their clients

1988 to 1996: Robert was a partner in Colburn & Colburn; producing and servicing commercial property and casualty and personal lines business. This partnership was affiliated with Hogg Robinson of Michigan, Inc. (presently Wells Fargo).

1984 to 1988: Robert was a producer with Hermelin, Colburn, Colburn, Blumberg, and Steinberg, a family owned insurance agency in Troy, Michigan.

1982 to 1984: Robert worked for the American International Group in New York City. His responsibilities included commercial property underwriting, brokerage marketing and treaty and facultative reinsurance placement.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: Robert Colburn earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Michigan in 1980. In 1981 he attended Arizona State University School of Business concentrating in their Insurance and Management curriculum.

COMMUNITY BACKGROUND: Robert Colburn has served in a variety of charitable and community organizations. Past involvement has included serving as a member of the Board of Governors of United Jewish Charities, past president, executive committee and board member of the Detroit Chapter of American ORT; National Major Gifts Committee Co-Chair and National board member of American ORT. Current involvement includes Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, member of the advisory board of the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program and Vice President and Board Member of Franklin Hills Country Club.

1996 to 2004: David was a founder and principal of Colburn Colburn & Associates, L.L.C. an independent insurance agency located in Southfield, Michigan. The agency primarily focused on the production and servicing of commercial property and casualty insurance and provided a full range of risk management services to their clients.

1988 to 1996: David was a partner in Colburn & Colburn; producing and servicing commercial property and casualty and personal lines business. This partnership was affiliated with Hogg Robinson of Michigan, Inc. (presently Wells Fargo). Life and disability insurance was also produced, however, on an individual basis.

1981 to 1988: David was a producer with Hermelin, Colburn, Colburn, Blumberg, and Steinberg, a family owned insurance agency in Troy, Michigan.

SPECIAL PROJECTS: David Colburn was appointed to a special committee for the Apartment Association of Michigan to deal with the increase in fair housing discrimination lawsuits in 1993. In addition to creating a seminar program to train members’ employees, the Association gave David Colburn an exclusive endorsement to act as agent in providing AAM’s members the discrimination policy he developed with Lloyds of London.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: David Colburn is a Licensed Attorney and Counselor in the State of Michigan, having received his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1981. David holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors from the University of Michigan.

COMMUNITY BACKGROUND: David Colburn has served as a board member and volunteer for numerous charitable and community organizations including the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, The Michigan Cancer Foundation, The University of Michigan Club of Greater Detroit, Vice President of American ORT and the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame.
